How to Prepare for Your First Turkish Hammam
Stepping into a centuries-old Ottoman bath house is one of the most rewarding cultural experiences in Istanbul. If you are wondering what to expect at a Turkish bath, here is the quintessential step-by-step ritual practiced since the 17th century.
The Traditional Hammam Process: Step by Step
- 1. Changing into a Peshtemal: You will be guided to a private dressing cabin where you wrap yourself in a traditional cotton woven towel called a peshtemal and put on bath slippers.
- 2. Heating on the Göbek Taşı (15-20 mins): Lie comfortably on the heated octagonal central marble platform. The gentle radiant heat relaxes deep muscle fibers and opens skin pores.
- 3. Cleansing by the Marble Basin: Move to a marble basin (kurna) and pour warm water over your body using a bath bowl (hamam tası). No soap is used at this stage so the scrub can effectively remove dead skin.
- 4. The Exfoliating Kese Scrub: Your attendant (tellak/natır) uses an authentic silk kese mitt to vigorously exfoliate dead skin layers, revealing smooth, breathing skin.
- 5. Luxurious Olive Oil Foam Massage: Pure olive oil soap lather is whipped into a cloud-like blanket covering your entire body, followed by a deeply relaxing head-to-toe foam massage.
- 6. Cooling Down & Herbal Tea: Wrap in clean, dry towels and retreat to the lounge area to sip Turkish tea or mineral water while your body temperature returns to normal.
